Sushi History

One of the earliest influences for the Japanese practise of applying rice to raw fish has been described as narezushi/salted fish, which is preserved in fermented rice for months at a time.

The rice was removed after the fish was fermented with rice vinegar, salt, and rice. The practise may be traced back to China's Neolithic cultures, when rice was first domesticated.

The rice's lacto-fermentation keeps the fish from rotting. Pickling was a technique to preserve excess fish and provide sustenance for the coming months, and narezushi became a popular protein source. Sushi actually means "sour-tasting," referring to the general sour and umami (savoury) flavour of the dish.

In the Muromachi period (1336–1573), vinegar was first used in the making of narezushi to improve both taste and preservation.

Fresh fish was not served over vinegared rice and nori until the Edo era (1603–1868).

In the 1820s or 1830s, Edo (today's Tokyo) became popular with nigirizushi. The chef Hanaya Yohei (1799–1858) is said to have invented or refined nigirizushi around 1824 at his Rygoku business. The dish was originally known as Edomae zushi because it was made with freshly caught fish from Edo-mae (Tokyo Bay).

How to Eat Sushi Correct Way

  • Sushi is best eaten with chopsticks. To dip the fish or topping part in soy sauce, turn the sushi upside down. If you soak the rice in too much soy sauce, the sushi will be overly salty.
  • When eating green pasta (wasabi), start with a small amount because it is spicy.
  • Ginger is meant to be eaten between sushi servings to cleanse and refresh the palate.

Hangout with friend or If you want to wow your sweetheart while speaking and trying Light food, go to Garnell Sushi in Zamalek, a clean white minimalist café. Indoor or outdoor seating is available, and each table has a barcode that can be scanned to access the computerised menu.

The restaurant assistants will also present you with manual menus, are quite friendly, and will assist you with menu selection or seating.

We found a comfy seat and were able to choose from the menu right away by scanning the barcode on the table. We finally decided on 1 Sushi set (16 pieces), which was a lot of fun to choose from because there were so many options.

The preparation time is short, and the presentation is stunning. We devoured each piece of sushi one by one, each one tasting unique based on our preferences. It feels lovely, light, and then it vanishes.
